An affordable, easy-to-use tool to help lessen the impact of extreme weather and flood events.
When extreme weather hits, ARK Flood Barriers provide an affordable, easy-to-use alternative to sandbags. Designed and fully manufactured in New Zealand, ARK helps communities, businesses, and councils protect people and property from flood damage quickly and effectively.
Back in 2022, watching people in Nelson stacking sandbags in the rain inspired us to find a better solution. After extensive research and local testing, we adapted the proven global concept of water-filled barriers for New Zealand conditions, creating ARK, a smarter, cleaner, and more sustainable way to manage flooding.
Reusable and lightweight, ARK barriers can be deployed in minutes with no heavy lifting, special gear, or machinery. They use water to divert water, making them an essential, ready-to-go flood response tool for Kiwi communities.
Cheaper than sandbags, especially
when covering large areas.
Quick to deploy, with no heavy
lifting or special gear required.
Reusable and clean, leaving no mess behind after use.
Used internationally for emergency response, construction, and dewatering.
It can be rolled out, filled, or moved as needed, and works in straight lines or curves.
Fully manufactured in New Zealand
using locally compatible fittings.
Safeguard gathering areas and local facilities.
Shield critical assets and transport networks.
Protect equipment, livestock, and land.
Create dry, safe work areas through dewatering or water control.
Protect homes and property from rising water.
Keep workplaces open and minimise downtime.
Deploying your ARK Flood Barriers is fast and straightforward.
This step-by-step guide walks you through the process, from preparing your site to safely storing your ARK system for future use.
Before deployment, identify your flood protection area and clear any large obstructions such as rocks, branches, or debris. A smooth surface ensures a tight, secure seal once the barriers are filled.
Remove ARK from its bag or release the storage strap. Unroll it along the chosen line, either straight or in a curve, depending on your site layout.
Ensure the large 80mm tank fittings are positioned at the top of each section before filling.
If using multiple ARK sections, place joiners roughly 1 metre underneath the first barrier before filling.
Roll out the second section end-to-end and secure the two clips together at the bottom edge to eliminate gaps when filled.
Wrap the joiner around both ARK sections and zip together securely.
Before filling, check that the two bottom base valves are closed and the four top tank fittings are open.
Always start filling from the lowest point if the ground is sloped. Fill until water exits from the opposite end, then close all valves and apply caps to seal the water inside.
Double-check that all top and bottom valves are closed before moving on to the next section.
Once floodwaters recede, open the lower valves to drain the water gradually.
Reuse the water for non-drinking purposes such as cleaning or irrigation. Rinse and wipe down the exterior of the barrier, removing any mud or debris, and allow it to dry completely.
Roll the ARK back up, secure it with the storage strap, or place it into its supplied bag for future use.
When good (new) driveways go bad.
With bad weather on the way, and a 24-hour notice to fix in place from their local council, Michelle and Ross contacted our GM Beni to see if one of our ARK Flood Barriers might resolve an issue for them.
An incorrect slope to their brand-new driveway meant that any heavy rainfall was running off in the wrong direction, causing flooding to the neighbouring property. They needed to find a temporary solution until the issue with the driveway could be permanently sorted.
They had bought a bunch of sandbags, realised they didn’t have enough so bought some more, and then the scale of the job at hand to fill and lay these across their driveway became clear.
Beni agreed to loan them an ARK in return for some in-action photos and an honest assessment of their ARK deployment experience.
ARK barriers are reusable, faster to deploy, and leave no mess. They use water to divert water, making them cleaner, safer, and more affordable than traditional sandbags
Simply roll them out, fill with water, and connect end-to-end to form a continuous watertight wall. They can also be positioned in curves or around key areas for tailored protection.
Each unit is made from durable, waterproof PVC with locally compatible fittings designed for New Zealand conditions.
Anywhere fast, temporary flood prevention is needed.
Yes. ARK Flood Barriers are designed for multiple deployments with proper cleaning and storage between uses.
Following major floods in Nelson and other parts of New Zealand, we saw the need for a more efficient and sustainable alternative to sandbags. We researched proven international options and came up with our own version, made for New Zealand conditions
